The mother of a teenager murdered in an unprovoked attack in a London bakery this weekend said she is relieved that he died in the arms of his brother.
Jimmy Mizen’s mother said today that she wished she had been able to cradle her 16-year-old son in his dying moments but was pleased that his brother was there with him.
Margaret Mizen, 55, said: “There was another son there as well, he wasn’t there at the time it happened but he managed to get there in time to hold Jimmy in his arms while he was dying. It’s a comfort to know my son was there with him.
“I got there as quick as I could run. I suppose I would have liked to have had him in my arms but I’m comforted by the fact he was in my son’s arms.
“My son wouldn’t let me go near him, he just said ‘Mum, it’s ok just wait’. Of course I wanted to be there – he’s my baby – but his brother loves him just as much as I do.”
Mrs Mizen, the mother of a further eight children, said that she refused to be bitter or filled with hate despite her son’s murder.
“People keep asking me ‘why are you not angry’, but there’s so much anger in this world. It’s anger that killed my son,” she said.
Jimmy suffered fatal cuts to his neck with glass following a row as he went to buy a lottery ticket in Lee, south east London, on Saturday morning.
When Jimmy, a devout Catholic, declined a challenge to fight, his attacker smashed down the door of the Three Cooks Bakery and picked up an advertising board which he wielded inside.
Jimmy, a pupil at St Thomas More Catholic Comprehensive in Eltham, died at the scene in front of his brother, becoming the 13th teenager to be murdered in London so far this year.
Detectives are believed to have spent several hours last night interviewing a “significant witness” – a white, middle-aged man who was inside the bakery at the time – after he came forward to help.
Today Markus Ryan, his head teacher, said: “Jimmy was a very well-liked, gentle student who always tried his best. Jimmy came from a loving, large Catholic family. Our thoughts and prayers are with Jimmy and his family at this very sad time.”
Mr Ryan said Jimmy’s father, Barry, played an active role supporting staff and students as deputy chairman of governors at the school.
The popular teenager, who lived with his family in Lee, was killed the day after his 16th birthday. He had been due to finish school today to embark on an apprenticeship in the housing and maintenance department at Southwark Council.
Mr Ryan said: “The school community is extremely shocked and saddened by the weekend’s event. We are holding a leavers’ Mass later today as this will be the last time we have our Year 11 students together in the school.
“St Thomas More is a very caring, compassionate school and this Mass will be dedicated to Jimmy and his family.”
He added: “This week would have been the start of the GCSE examination period for Jimmy and his year group. We will be considering very carefully any additional support we may need to offer to Jimmy’s classmates during this already stressful time.”
Outside the school gates this morning, parents and pupils were struggling to come to terms with the killing of one of its students.
Parent Eva Davies, whose son attends the school, said the reaction had been one of disbelief.
She said: “I feel very angry this can happen to a young boy. He just went into a bakery. I just can’t believe it.”
Julie Smith, who has two daughters at the school, added: “It’s just so sad and so tragic. Something has got to be done about youth violence.”
Another parent, Anne-Marie Lancashire, said: “We are just really shocked. I’d just like to offer my condolences to the family and say they are in our prayers. It’s just an awful thing for the pupils to go through.”

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord; and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen.
Lucy, Norfolk,
Catholics are a people of hope, and I like to think that Jimmy is in heaven. If he is, I'm sure he'll be praying for his family, his city, his country, his world. How his gentle simplicity and goodness have touched our society! What a great family!

I wonder how many previous convictions this murderer had... How many times he violated society's rules, how many times he was brought before the courts, how many times he got a little slap on the wrist and released to cause havoc again in our society.
Until he kills. And then what? Out in 5 years?
Laura Roberts, London, UK
It is absolutely scandalous that no description has been given of the murderer. He's out there right now, free, has killed and could kill again, is being shielded, and yet we're not told what he looks like. We have no means of tracking him down, or of protecting ourselves. The police must comment.
James, London, UK
Does Trevor Phiips know the description of the attacker? Is anybody going to tell us what he looks like?
Graham W., London, UK
Another tragedy due widespread anger and violence in our socieity. We must end it. Rest in peace Jimmy. My prayers are with your family.

"Spare the rod and spoil the child" those backward, ignorant people used to say in the bad old days. How grateful we all are that we've done away with instilling discipline in children, and how much better our society is for it. How safe our streets are, and how respectful and polite youngsters are!
Jacques Francis, Westcott,
I agree, the enthnicity of anyone apart from the suspect is not relevant. And all you people crying for capital punishment, wake up to yourselves. What is that going to ever solve?
Brandon, London,
Is there a news blackout on the identity of the murderer?
nb, London, UK
Yet again another young person is the victim of street violence. I hope they throw this thug in jail to rot. What pain for yet another mother?
Heather Ince, Newcasle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear
There is a petition on the Downing Street website for a referendum on the reintroduction of capital punishment. Having read this story, I have just signed it. A link to the petition is below:

I used to live in the Eltham and Sidcup area which I considered to be relatively safe compared with other parts of South London. This violence is creeping day by day further and further. Meanwhile the politically correct police and media refuse to give out a description of the attacker. Sick!!!!!!
Richard K, Nottingham,
Why is it being stated that the ethnic origin of the key witness is white but nothing is being said about the ethnic origin of the suspect ?
Normally by now the public is given some sort description of a suspect.
C.Rookes, Exmouth, u.k
I wish the family strength. Hopefully their strong family unity will help them through this most unimaginable horrific event.
I hope they catch the killer soon and I hope he rots in jail for ever. Make the streets of London safe for decent people. Give the police power to act. Come on Boris!
JANE, London,

''...How can society help and ensure that the perpetrator is brought to justice, when we don't even know what he looks like?...''
Easy...bring back capital punishment for crimes such as this.

Why is there no description of the attacker if a significant witness has come forward?
This happened on a busy high street so why havent any CCTV pictures been released?
Jay, Manchester, UK
