Tom Baldwin in Washington

Hillary Clinton yesterday waded for the first time into the bitter controversy about Barack Obama's pastor, even as she tried to cover her own embarrassment at being caught exaggerating the risks of her trip to Bosnia in 1996, writes Tom Baldwin in Washington.
At a Pennsylvania press conference, Mrs Clinton said she would have quit the Rev Jeremiah Wright's church in protest against his anti-American and racially-charged sermons. "He would not have been my pastor," she said.
Comparing the language he used about whites to racist remarks about black people, she warned that freedom of speech should not be abused, saying: "It's time to stand up for what is right... hate speech is unacceptable in any setting."
She said: "We don't have a choice when it comes to our relatives. We have a choice when it comes to our pastors and the churches we attend. Everyone will have to decide these matters for themselves. They are obviously very personal matters." She added that if Mr Wright had been her pastor, "the choice would be clear".
Mr Obama has refused to leave his Chicago church despite condemning Mr Wright's sermons that included the stance that the US practised state terrorism and 9/11 had been chickens "coming home to roost". His pastor for more than 20 years has also described the country as the "US KKK of A" and said that black people should sing "God damn America" rather than "God Bless America".
In a generally well-received speech last week, the Democratic frontrunner instead tried to put Mr Wright's views in the context of an older generation of African Americans who still felt the pain and humiliation of segregation. Mr Obama said he could no more disown a religious mentor - who had married him and baptised his children - than he could disown the black community as a whole.
A scheduled sermon by Mr Wright in Florida last night, his first since the row over his black liberationist theology exploded a fortnight ago, was cancelled at short notice.
Mr Obama's spokesman, Bill Burton, voiced suspicion that the timing of Mrs Clinton remarks had more to do with her own problems than any sense of outrage over Mr Wright.
“After originally refusing to play politics with this issue, it’s disappointing to see Hillary Clinton’s campaign sink to this low in a transparent effort to distract attention away from the story she made up about dodging sniper fire in Bosnia," he said.
In a speech in Washington last week, Mrs Clinton said of the trip she made as First Lady: “I remember landing under sniper fire. There was supposed to be some kind of a greeting ceremony at the airport, but instead we just ran with our heads down to get into the vehicles to get to our base.”
But TV footage shows Mrs Clinton and her daughter, Chelsea, as well as other members of her party such as singer Sheryl Crow and the comedian Sinbad, stepping calmly off the aircraft. She was then shown wreathed in smiles as she hugged and kissed a local girl who presented her with a letter.
Confronted by such evidence this week, Mrs Clinton admitted her comments had been a “mis-statement” which she described as a “minor blip”. Asked to explain the happy scenes captured by TV, she said, "I had to meet this eight-year-old girl", so “I took her stuff and left”.
Yesterday, she added a note of defiance, saying: "So I made a mistake. That happens. It shows I'm human - which for some people is a revelation." In a radio interview Mrs Clinton went even further, saying: "Last week, you know, for the first time in 12 or so years I misspoke.”
In another day marked by clashes between the two Democratic candidates - which some party elders fear could damage their chances of re-gaining the White House - Mrs Clinton predicted the race would go on all the way until the summer.
Dismissing recent claims that Mr Obama's delegate lead is such that her campaign has almost zero chance of winning the nomination, she said: “I think that what we have to wait and see is what happens in the next three months.
"There’s been a lot of talk about what if, what if, what if. Let’s wait until we get some facts. Over the next months millions of people are going to vote. And we should wait and see the outcome of those votes.”
Mrs Clinton's spokesman, Phil Singer, later hit back at suggestions from the Obama camp that she was playing politics with the issue of Mr Wright. “Senator Clinton was asked a question and answered it based on her personal views.," he said. "Considering that the Obama campaign peddled a photo of President Clinton with Reverend Wright less than 48 hours after Senator Obama gave a speech calling for a high-minded discussion on race, this latest attack is disingenuous.”

One thing I think the Clintons have never realized is how differently campaigns are covered by the press these days. You can't expect something like this Bosnia story to just be glossed over. Of course it's going to be reported as false. But beyond that, the whole media approach is different now... almost every news story is about how a candidate is trying to spin this or that event. It's all about how they're running their campaigns, how much money they've got left... what a candidate actually says in a speech is considerd at best secondary and at worst as barely worth mentioning. The political coverage is almost solely focused on the mechanics of the presidential campaigns. Nothing is taken at face value anymore.
I'm not saying this is wrong, I'm just saying that Clinton, more than either Obama or McCain, seems incapable of recognizing it.

The husband didn't inhale and the wife mis spoke..
Kara Swart, London, UK
I have to admit that if I had an ego the size of Ms. Clinton's I might "misremember" an incident such as the one twelve years ago, in order that it might apear more heroic later. Of course she has "misremembered2 it a number of times, at the most convenient of times.
I also want to stick up for her. She probably would never have stayed in such a controversial church. She would have had the pastor and all the leading members investigated and checked out by her polsters, and any church that was this controversial would have ben ruled out unless the pollsters thought they might prove popular.
I supose after all having a pastor like this is much more important than what your position on the war in Iraq was. After al, as McCain says, "that was in the past."
Christopher Hobe Morrison, Pine Bush, Ulster County, NY, USA
If Hilary Clinton really had been visiting a war-zone and had been advised that there was a risk of sniper fire it begs the question of why she would have wanted to take her daughter Chelsea with her.
I am sure the Secret Service would have advised Hilary Clinton that while she may want to put herself in the firing line she had absolutely no right to endanger the safety of her daughter who was only a minor at the time.
Paul Dawson, London, England
So, Obama is criticised for sticking to his principles and community, despite having brilliantly explained himself whereas it comes out once again that Clinton is an arrogant, manipulative liar who feels no need to apologise for blatantly misleading the American public.
David, Norwich, UK
In my view everyone makes a mistake, and then there are those who stand up for their mistakes and those who will dig a hole 6 feet deep then jump in it to cover it up. Obama's didn't repeat the words of his pastor and no one even knows if he said AMEN to any of the pastors theology. The truth of the matter is we can only be accountable for someone else's actions to a certain degree and we have to be fully accountable for our own actions. We can't justify Hillary's lies by saying I mis-spoke that is Lawyer talk, it is spitting out comments during a trial and then saying I retract my last statement before the judge punishes you. You can't Lie to your country that is what George Bush has been doing and you can't Over exaggerate to your country that is what has us in a Billion Dollar Bankrupt our country and take food off our tables because GAS cost more than our rents now that we can't afford either. We as american people are being financially molested by presidential institutions.
Charlie Hustle, Los angeles, CA
This really does call into question her abilities under pressure. Bad enough that she lied - or embellished the truth if we are trying to be generous - in order to bolster her credentials as someone who has been there, done it and got the t-shirt. But it was such a stupid lie. Did she really think that no one would recall the actual events?
Sadly I think she sees what she thought of as her rightful inheritance slipping away from her and she is showing that - like most other politicians - the desire for power means more than little inconveniences like the truth! Shame on you Hillary!

'Misspoke' - isn't what Monia said to Bill all those years ago! He also 'misspoke' when he was hauled in front of the nation as well.
America wake up! This woman is poison.

This is the country that still refuses HIV+ people from entering their country, the so-called 'Land of the Free'. What do we expect from a country that bases its culture on hypocrisy?!
Andy, Tokyo,
It seems to run in the family. This will be remembered along with her husband's immortal line "I did not have sex with that woman."
Miriam, RAK, UAE
As a Democrat, my view is that this election cycle is starting to go from exciting to embarrassing (which, sadly, is somewhat typical of our party). I rather admire both Senator Clinton and Senator Obama--they're both intelligent people and strong presidential candidates--but in the back of my mind I'm hoping for a delegate stalemate that forces a brokered Democratic convention in Denver this coming late-summer.
Though I previously thought such a scenario would be harmful to the eventual nominee, I'm now of the opinion that it might help to heal the wounds opened up of late by forcing delegates into a compromise for one candidate or the other, or even someone else altogether. (In brokered conventions, the voting stalemates in the country often spill over to the convention floor, and can sometimes only be healed if an alternative candidate is settled upon.)
If worst came to worst, I'd love to see Bill Richardson or Joe Biden be nominated. They'd be strong candidates in a pinch.
Chris Hassel, Saint Paul, USA / Minnesota
I find it thoroughly depressing that the race for arguably the most important job in the world has descended into this farcical tot for tat slanging match - and its not just this story, its been going on for weeks now.
Is there no end to the depths either will go to undermine the other in a desperate attempt to gain the upper hand.
Its just embarrassing.
This story has been running far too long and quite frankly I am sick of the whole sorry episode.
Adam, Swindon, Wilts
She "misspoke for the first time in twelve years? Yeah. That's a good one. David Geffen, a former Clinton funder who now supports Obama, said last year that one of the reasons he switched was their lying. "Everybody in politics lies, but they do it with such ease, it's troubling." People should take heed. No word that comes out of Mrs. Clinton's mouth will be kept.
RTM, New York City, USA
It's a big country, the US - surely they can find someone with a bit more integrity to nominate for President amongst all those people. After this, what about HCs standing in relation to foreign policy if she ever got elected? Lokk on the bright side - at least true character has been exposed now. It's not too late to get rid and avoid inflicting her on the world community.
R Towner, Liverpool,
Hillary my dear, this is not the first time in 12 or so years that you've misspoken, its just the first time you get caught.
I think the word "misspoken" is a very oversimplified term to use i this case, ermmm .... How about "lied"?
Dina, Beirut, Lebanon
There is something deeply distasteful about two sad individuals, the Clintons, so selfishly using every shady and almost downright dishonest tactic, to put themselves before the good of the party or the good of the nation.
Should they win the nomination (and no matter what anyone says Senator Obama is really competing against TWO people, not one) it will be a sad day for the Democratic Party. Should they go on to win the Presidency it will be a tragic day for the United States of America and one, which in time, will be bitterly regretted.
For there is simply no way the Clintons can unify America and, charistmatic and shady as they are, the World has moved on. They are most certainly not the candidates who can improve the image of the USA on the worldwide stage.
Geoffrey, Belfast,
It was very worrying to see that this lady who indeed is aspiring for high office repeated an innacurate story on three different occasions with the precision so convincing as if it happened yesterday; she then turns round and says..ha! I made a mistake, we all make mistakes. I agree we all make mistakes but if you are going to tell the world such detail are you not going to make sure you confim the story in your mind before you open your mouth? This is very worrying, when you hold high office like the one she is aspiring to, you need to get your facts right, certainly if you are going to repeat the story several times to people. Imagine if we had not seen the pictures! Is there more of this in the back ground? This experience she talks about I am confused about, I thought it was Bill who was in office, does that mean she was getting experience answering 3a.m. calls or was it Bill Clinton?
is this the end of this contest perhaps? Think about it Democrats. lest we cause more damage
Margaret Kalilani, London, UK
Pots, kettles, more pots, politicians.... I just can't imagine what the "correct" colour would be in this case and neither it seems does anyone else.
Politicians may lie a bit more than other people (lawyers excepted), it certainly gets reported a lot more. None of the candidates (including McCain) knows much about anything outside Washington/US politics. Why is anyone surprised they make things up, dodge issues etc. Vote "none of the above".
Nick, London,
Hillary Clinton - Please do the right thing and drop out of the race. I know it is difficult for you to accept defeat, but you are now making a big fool of yourself. And if you ever entertained some hope about your daughter Chelsea becoming President one day, then do her a favour... Yes, indeed, do it for her if not for the American people - step down in favour of Obama and the Democratic Party.
Elias, Stevenage, UK
"many of us are sick to death of her! her arrogance, delusion, hypocrisy, immorality are downright exhausting. she adds negative drama to each new day.

Sounds like a bog-standard and typical American President to me. Someone who can uphold the true all-American values of arrogance, delusion, hypocrisy, immorality and negative drama....
Will, Redcar, England
interesting that hilary would give up on her pastor but not her husband.
hasnt america had enough of the clintons
sandra, melbourne, australia
What surprises me more in all of this election cycle is the sheer difference in levels of intellect, dignity and style between the two candidates.
A F Davidson, Leeds, UK
The American people should consider themselves fortunate that Hillary Clinton is showing herself as she is - a product of old style political sleaze, and a person with a stomach-turning sense of entitlement, willing to go to any lengths to be elected. That George W. Bush can deploy nuclear power is frightening, that someone as loose with the truth as Hillary Clinton would return to the White House is a risk the US and the world simply cannot take.
In contrast, Barrack Obama has displayed courage and true statesmanlike qualities. Those of us from the rest of the world pray for his success.
If John McCain and Barrack Obama are the candidates, a page will already have been turned in history.
Go, Obama, go!!!
David, Amstelveen, Netherlands
Hillary Clinton is a liar and a hypocrite. She doesn't have anymore experience than Obama. All she has is name recognition. Being the First lady doesn't make you qualified. She lied about the Irish peace agreement, Bosnia and NAFTA. With each day I respect her less. Also, even though Obama made a huge mistake with his pastor, he isnt alone. McCain sought out the support of Pastor Hagee ( an anti antisemite/anti-catholic) and Mrs Clinton sought he support of Jesse Jackson when Bill Clinton cheated on her and if you look at Jackson past, he has made both racist and anti semetic statement. She is an unapologetic liar. I am voting McCain or Obama.
cn, chicago, illinois
Mrs Clinton seeks power at ANY price! She thinks that she has the right to pwer and will tell ANY lie to get what she desires most and that is power!
She claims to have brought peace to Ulster? LIE! She claims to have brought peace to Kosovo? LIE!
She claims to have come under sniper fire? LIE!
The root source of the anti Obama smears and lies is the Clinton camp and she will stop at nothing, no dirty trick will be to low!
When she thought that crying her eyes out would buy her a few votes she didnt hesitate did she?
The Clintons are masters at the art of media manipulation and they have been a stain on the reputation of our brothers in arms and the Leaders of the free western world. I hope and pray these sad and pathetic power grabbing Clintons are given the bums rush at the earliest opportunity by the great American people!
My prediction last year was that Obama & Edwards will go forward to win the next general election and I hope this comes to pass.
GOD BLESS THE USA!
Stephanie King, Larnaca, Cyprus
What? The Clintons lying? Come, come, this must surely be a right wing conspiracy.
Eugene, Heidelberg, germany
Let's not accuse this woman of exaggerating. She sealed the Northern Ireland peace process all on her own, lol.
Paul, Coventry, England
Perhaps Hillary simply does not understand there is a big difference between lying and misspeaking...John McCain "misspoke" as he wrongly identified Iranian/Iraqian factions. An understandable mistake. Hillary and Chelsea both clearly lied about what happened on her Bosnia trip. A few words, may be considered a simple mistake...a full-on description of something that definitely did not happen makes the teller of the tale a BIG FAT LIAR...(AND CHELSEA IS ALSO A LIAR) She should never have said anything rather that back up her mothers lies) Apparently "like father, like mother, like daughter"! Tacky, tacky, tacky,,,the Clinton family.
sylvia flinn, cypress, California
VOTERS; take a careful look at what's happened to the Democrat Party since Hillary began to mud-sling at Obama. It is clear that Hillary has a knack of bringing people down to her level, which is pretty low indeed.
Letting this woman stay in the race for the Democartic nomination is like comitting suicide for the Democrats. Hillary started this disgusting "dialog". Obama can't just let her LYING, MISLEADING AND UNFAIR comments go by without responding, and so, there has been created this never ending cycle of negativity.
HILLARY- HAVE A LITTLE CLASS FOR ONCE IN YOUR LIFE, AND GO AWAY !!
.
Hill-B-Gone, Cleveland, Ohio
And she says that the press and media are against her!
Hilary: Unfortunately, the press and media have been around for as long as YOU have been, they remember your lies from then, they remember your lies now, they have seen you as you are, not what you want to make people think you are. You are a pack of lies, deceit and opportunism. You knew that your husband was planning to pardon a criminal for money, espouse Kazakhstan premier for Uranium cause for a business friend and in return get money. You untrustworthy and unscrupulous. For you, aspiring to be the president is good for your business, not for your country.
Joe, London, UK
The Democrats seemed to have the election in the bag. Now they are ripping themselves apart - what a shame that the world will suffer for such egos. I wish for someone with intergrity and not just pure ambition - why do we allow such people to hold power? Does ambition equal ability? Not in my book - ambition is the death of integrity
Bill, Perth, Australia

No, which is why Obama will get the nomination. Of course, I won't be surprised if my fellow Americans choose McCain. America is an interesting country, it has just as many dumb people as smart people, and that makes elections complicated.

You people could see Hillary rob a bank on video and still not believe. It must be Obama pastor who release the video.

First time in 12 years???? So what was the *story* about opposing NAFTA that her book says was one of the major accomplishments of her husband's time in the White House and that her calendars have shown she was involved with promoting? And her *wink, wink* to the Canadians about NAFTA the whole time she was slamming Obama for it. I don't find her trustworthy at all.
Cyndie, Huntingdon, USA
Like many South Africans I believe the election of Barck Obama to the White House will allow America to regain respect as a world leader espousing Western values. Mrs Clinton will not take America anywhere but to more loathing of the American flag. Obama will symbolise everything America is supposed to stand for.
Graham Lizamore, East London, South Africa
She is just a typical politician. I didn't like her as First Lady and I certainly don't like her now. She just says whatever they put in front of her. How on earth can a person mis-speak on something that supposedly happened to them. If I was under sniper fire, I think I would remember that. If I wasn't, I would remember that also. She needs to quit while the quittin's good.
Kimberly, Sacramento, California

Yes, I agree, that does seem like someone who has a high self-opinion...
My concern, though, is not about the past, or a candidate's poor memory of it, unless it brings light to their truthfulness or their desire to impress. Rather, I am interested in knowing what each candidate has to offer me, my family, my country. The U.S. has a limited amount of resources, and I'd like to know how each candidate would 'spend' their 4 years in office. When our young people in Iraq come home, will we provide them with jobs that will feed their families as well as rebuild OUR nation? Will we build our manufacturing capability to decrease our dependence? We may have entered a war based on faulty/false information, but after an apology and 4000 American lives, their civil problems may exceed our ability to 'fix' the situation. Perhaps for now we should turn our interest and resources inward, to help our own people. Again, I want to know, truthfully, what the candidates will do for us.
mike, los angeles,
Our friends across the "pond" ,
Would you be happy and trust your country to someone who claims " for the first time in 12 years I mis-spoke ". ???
Ask yourselves , is anybody that perfect ???
