Damien Comolli is fighting to save his position as Tottenham Hotspur sporting director. The Frenchman has this summer's transfer window to recoup some of the substantial amount of money that the club have spent, under his direction, on players in recent seasons or risk being sacked in the autumn after three years in his post.
Comolli's tenure has come under scrutiny in part because of the estimated fall in the value of some of his expensive acquisitions and some disagreements with Juande Ramos, the Tottenham head coach. Darren Bent, Younès Kaboul, Ricardo Rocha and Kevin-Prince Boateng cost a combined fee of about £32million in the past 18 months, but they are now arguably worth half that sum. This has led to questions about whether Comolli is delivering value for money.
Tottenham would not want to disrupt their transfer strategy this summer by dismissing Comolli now. Daniel Levy, the chairman, has shown that he is willing to give his staff an opportunity to turn things around. He backed Glenn Hoddle when the board voted on his managerial future five years ago and supported Martin Jol, the manager last summer, when one director at the club wanted to replace the Dutchman with Harry Redknapp, the Portsmouth manager.
Some fans have questioned Comolli's ability to spot a good player, but that does not appear to be a concern inside the club. However, there is some disquiet at White Hart Lane at the money - and hence profit - that could be raised by the sale of the players who have arrived under Comolli.
There are also questions over the fees paid for some players. Gilberto, a 31-year-old Brazil left back, cost £1.8million in January, when he had six months remaining on his contract at Hertha Berlin. He arrived overweight and unfit. Boateng was bought for nearly £5million last summer, also from Hertha, despite Seville, the other suitor, offering half as much. Before that, eyebrows were raised at the arrivals of Danny Murphy and Mido for a combined fee of £6.5million.
Comolli will have a chance to realign his transfer balance sheet, with Dimitar Berbatov expected to realise a profit of about £17million on the £10.9million paid to Bayer Leverkusen in 2006, if the Bulgaria forward leaves.
Signings are not only the responsibility of Comolli. Every member of Tottenham's management group, comprising Levy, Comolli, Ramos and John Alexander, the club secretary, are supposed to agree about a particular player. However, Jol has since complained that he did not want some of the acquisitions, while Ramos rejected eight players offered to him in January.
The club backed Comolli during his disagreements with Jol, but it is not certain that they will do so with Ramos, who holds a stronger bargaining position. There is no suggestion that the club will discard their continental structure, brought in by Levy. Ramos enjoyed success working under the system at Seville, where Ramón Rodríguez Monchi, the sporting director with whom he had an uncomfortable relationship, was credited with discovering the best players.

So darren bent needs time? how funny, but woodgate does not? The fact is spurs have paid over the odds for some players yes bent is good on his day but 16.8 or what ever he cost is way to much for bent.
Does Ramos even want him? who really knows?
andrew, LONDON (U.K), london
To say signings such as Hutton and Woodgate were bad business is short sighted. Being a life long Spurs fan i feel the frustration us as fans suffer, but we judge to quickly at times. We havent identified key positions and bought quality players there, and gamble to much on there future potential.
David Parkinson, Kings Lynn, England
When are Spurs gonna realise they are a football club and not just a business?
The fans need and deserve more...
Anthony Slater, Valletta, Malta
Aren't we being too impatient, it's these signings first season. It does take time to get use to the standard of the Premier league, at least a season for some players. Successful teams like Man.United, Real Madrid even Barcelona always give their new highly potential signings time.
Femi, Chigwell, England
I can't really see that we've lost money on anyone. Bent is a proven goal scorer, and if given a run in the team and stays fit he will score 20+ a season.
Woodgate, Hutton and Bale have been good signings. Kaboul, Boatang are young and will improve.
Tim, Harrow,
I think comolli have to go. The man costs tottenham to much money. Bent is the biggest failiure of the year, and so on comes boateng, gilberto.. I dont think we need a sport director, why cant ramos deside for himself wich players comes and goes.. only he know hwo will fit the squad.
Alex A, lutness, Norway
i think u guys are a bit harsh about saying the signings of hutton and woodgate were bad. dont get me wrong comolli has had stupid signings like bent and gilberto oh and of course kp boateng.
sparky, north london, england
I totally agree with the article, but sorry Chris, Hutton isn't a waste of money!! He's worth every penny of the fee paid for him. £8m, £9m what ever it was, he will turn out to be a bargain!! COYS!
Dave, London,
well if you think spurs have a problem, you should see what rubbish newcastle have been buying over the years with the likes of boumsong 8m
luque 9.5m, carl cort 7m, hugo vianna 8.5m,bramble 4.5m, robert 9m, marcelino 5m.
total =51.5m
and the return on sales=8m
sorry didn't mention carr 2m
Phil Reed, chicago, U.S.A
Comolli needs to go, dreadful signings and has wasted millions of the club's money. He is the main problem at the club and wjy we are going backwards as a club. Bent, Kaaboul, Boateng, Gilberto, Hutton all a big waste of money. Please rid of him now Mr Levy
Chris, london,
I wonder if Martin Jol is laughing or crying?
Surely the highest profile mistake was Darren Bent - £16M? when we already had a strong front line but light in defence and midfield; Woodgate and Hutton cost the same in total.
I don't think Bent was Jol's decision! But he paid for it.
Andrew, Ross-on-Wye,
Berbatov was identified and nearly signed in 2005 before Commoli arrived so he should not take credit for any profit - the only successes pre Ramos have been malbranque and bale whom we all knew about ps please dont forget Ghaly and Essou Akotto on your list
emma granditer, london,
He should never have been hired in the first place, after all how can you trust someone to find quality players for you that used to work for Arsenal.
Steven Porter, Barcelona, Spain
Typical of Spurs - they hijacked Comolli from Arsenal because they thought he was the man behind Wenger's brilliant signings.
Instead of finding there own way Spurs try to emulate others. This is a fundamental problem with the club's culture.
Will they ever learn?
Jim, london,
Can someone tell me where Spurs are getting the money for all these buys in the first place? With a new stadium proposal around the corner i can't see how this kind of spending can add up.
james travers, florianopolis, brazil
even if the combined cost was only £22m plus some hefty contracts of course, they are still only worth half of it now. Utter rubbish. The question of whether he has delivered value for money shouldnt take up much boardroom time.
clive, chelmsford,
For me the structure doesn't work as the manager isn't fully accountable for the signings. Levy always spends money but the signings don't compare to whats being bought down the road. Taarbat was supposed to be the new Zidane according to Comolli...how many games has he played? Comolli must go...
Neal, Leeds, UK
I don't mind the young players that we have brought in. Its the utter rubbish like Didier Zokora who you can see Comolli's direct involvement in (they were both from St Etienne) that is the principle issue.
Dave, London,
I just wanted to point out that the amount you quoted for Darren Bent, Younès Kaboul, Ricardo Rocha and Kevin-Prince Boateng of £32 million is incorrect. The £32 million quoted included a lot of add on's which Spurs are not due to pay. The actual figure paid for these players in closer to £22M.
Ron, Windsor, UK
Comolli should go now. "Management" will never work in soccer. It takes inspirational people like Wenger, Fergie, O'Neill to bring success to a club. Ramos must have the ONLY say in who is signed. If Levy cannot live with that he should go too.
Leigh Vernier, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
"Jol has since complained that he did not want some of the acquisitions". I don't understand this. The manager is held responsible for the performance of the team and yet players he doesn't want are "forced" upon him. Surely this is not the management structure in place at ManU/Arsenal.
John M, Birmingham, UK
I am becoming increasingly worried with the amount of money we are spending on 'promising' young players that aren't developing. With Berba almost certain to go and plenty of players being linked with us, it'll be another interesting transfer window for Spurs
